Week 1 - Managing feelings and behaviour
Four activities to deliver across the week on a day and time to suit you.
Children to be able to identify, recognise and name basic emotions such as happiness, sadness and anger.
YOU NEED
- A book chosen from the Early Years Book List (Week 1)
- Resources to extend learning from the story – see our Story Extension Guide
- Small Group Activity Card - Box of Feelings
- Baskets or boxes
- Feelings Cards (Activity Sheet 1a) (optional)
- Balls
- Small Group Activity Card - Music and Movement
- Songs and/or music
- Dance props (scarves, ribbon, hats etc.)
- Reflections Sheet
1) Story
- Select a book from our Early Years Book List or one of your own that introduces the wide variety of feelings we all experience.
- Read the book at the beginning of the week to the whole class and allow time for interactive reading and discussion of the book.
- Focus the discussion on labelling feelings words.
2) Story Extension
- To further extend and develop the learning from the story, prepare, introduce and include a story extension activity into wider provision.

3) Box of Feelings
- A throwing game with boxes showing different emotions as the targets.
- Read through the Small Group Activity Card to support with preparation and delivery of this small group activity.
4) Music and Movement
- Use music to generate emotions for discussion and promote self-expression through movement.
- Read through the Small Group Activity Card to support with preparation and delivery of this small group activity.
